Mahatma Gandhi and Jagannath

It was a windy morning on Sunday, 2 October 2011. Sri Jagannath Baladev and Subhadramayi went on Their last Rathayatra of the year. The Destination was Queens Village, New York...As usual whether its someone's birthday, wedding anniversary or any other occasion, the devotees sneaked in the element of Krishna Consciousness by holding a Rathayatra along with the Mahatma Gandhi Peace March that was being held to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, father of the nation of India. While the crowds celebrated the peace march with a band and music and dance, the devotees reached out to the crowds with their exhilarating Kirtan. As the words " Gauranga, Gauranga GAURANGA" pounded the air, some people stood rooted to the sidewalk, others smiled and swayed slightly. Still others jumped into the kirtan in feigning enthusiasm. Jagannath Baladev and Subhadra, the most merciful forms of the Lord seemed to enjoy Their day out at Queens.
A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.
Bhagavad Gita 5.29
The devotees hoped to achieve just this, by distributing wonderful prasadam. The people gathered assumed that they were free from oppression, but freedom from the pangs of material miseries, beginning with the body and the senses is not easy unless one can reflect deeply on the cause of suffering and the ways to get out of it. Srila Prabhupada mentions in the purports of the 3 Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, that as long as creation exists, preaching will go on side by side to guide and connect the lost souls to Krishna. We pray to become instruments in this mission.
Here are some pictures of the Rathayatra......

The Swing Festival

In his description of the Jhulan Yatra festival Guru Maharaja HH Bhakti Tirtha Swami, gives us insight into the nature of activities that one must get ready for in the spiritual world. The Jhulan yatra is one such festival that celebrates the meeting of Radha Krishna and all the friends in the many groves of Vrindavan. We tried to recreate in our own small way with dolls, this beautiful pastime that takes place during the monsoon season. On the last day we dressed Srimati Radharani in a flower outfit and Shyam was dressed up as a uniquely charming blue bumble bee...Here are some pictures!

Makanchor

Early this month (August) i was flooded with 4 visitors of a special kind. Each was a little baby whose reddish black hair was tied in a topknot, whose eyes were lined with kohl to keep those evil eyes at bay, whose dress fanned out like a blossoming lotus that encircled the nectar laden bee. In His chubby hands He held a laddu and was trying to crawl, maybe He was looking for His laddu crazy friend Batu, or maybe it is a butter ball which He is taking for His freind Dadhi.Yes, it was Laddu Gopal. He came from 4 different devotees who were on vacation, wanted to get painted etc.  Not one or two but 4 Gopals.I had a lot of fun caring for Gopal and reading about Him. In the photos you will find two of the  Gopals who visited.
Some may argue that worshipping Gopal is not in line with the Gaudiya tradition. To them I would like to copy the following lines from Srila Prabhupada's Nectar of Devotion, where Srila Rupa Goswami describes the exquisite beauty of Gopal.

The childhood ages of Kṛṣṇa are divided into three periods: the beginning of kaumāra age, the middle of kaumāra age and the end of kaumāra age. During the beginning and middle of the kaumāra age, Kṛṣṇa's thighs are fatty, and the inner part of His eyes are whitish. There are signs of teeth coming out, and He is very mild and gentle. He is described as follows: "When Kṛṣṇa had only three or four teeth coming out of His gums, His thighs were fatty, His body was very, very short, and He began to enhance the parental love of Nanda Mahārāja and mother Yaśodā with the activities of His childish body. He was sometimes stepping with His legs again and again, sometimes crying, sometimes smiling, sometimes sucking His thumb and sometimes lying down flat. These are some of the different activities of the child Kṛṣṇa. When Kṛṣṇa was lying down flat, sometimes sucking the toes of His feet, sometimes throwing His legs upward, sometimes crying and sometimes smiling, mother Yaśodā, seeing her son in such pastimes, did not show any sign of restricting Him, but rather began to watch her child with eagerness, enjoying these childhood pastimes." In the beginning of Kṛṣṇa's kaumāra age, the nails of tigers were set in a golden necklace about His neck. There was protective tilaka on His forehead, black mascara around His eyes and silk thread around His waist. These are the descriptions of Kṛṣṇa's dress at the beginning of the kaumāra age.

When Nanda Mahārāja saw the beauty of child Kṛṣṇa, with tiger nails on His chest, a complexion like the new-grown tamāla tree, beautifully decorated tilaka made with cow's urine, arm decorations of nice silk thread, and silk clothes tied around His waist — when Nanda Mahārāja saw his child like this, he never became satiated by the child's beauty.

In the middle kaumāra age, the upper portion of Kṛṣṇa's hair falls around His eyes. Sometimes He is covered with cloth around the lower part of His body, and sometimes He is completely naked. Sometimes He tries to walk, taking step by step, and sometimes He talks very sweetly, in broken language. These are some of the symptoms of His middle kaumāra age. He is thus described when mother Yaśodā once saw Him in His middle kaumāra age: His scattered hairs were touching His eyebrows, and His eyes were restless, but He could not express His feelings with proper words; still, when He was talking, His talk was so nice and sweet to hear. When mother Yaśodā looked at His little ears and saw Him naked, trying to run very quickly with His little legs, she was merged into the ocean of nectar. Kṛṣṇa's ornaments at this age are a pearl hanging from the septum of His nose, butter on His lotuslike palms, and some small bells hanging from His waist. It is stated that when mother Yaśodā saw that the child was moving, ringing the bells on His waist, smiling at her with a pearl between His nostrils and with butter on His hands, she became wonderfully pleased to see her little child in that fashion.

While Kṛṣṇa was in the middle of His kaumāra age, His waist became thinner, His chest became broader, and His head was decorated with His curly hairs, resembling the falling of the wings of a crow. These wonderful features of Kṛṣṇa's body never failed to astonish mother Yaśodā. At the end of His kaumāra age, Kṛṣṇa carried a small stick in His hand, His clothing was a little longer, and He had a knot around His waist, resembling the hood of a snake. In that dress He used to take care of the calves near the house, and sometimes He played with cowherd boys of about the same age. He had a slender flute and a buffalo-horn bugle, and sometimes He played on a flute made from the leaves of trees. These are some of the symptoms of the end of Kṛṣṇa's kaumāra age.

When Kṛṣṇa was a little grown up and was taking care of the small calves, He would often go near the forest. And when He was a little bit late returning home, Nanda Mahārāja would immediately get up on the candra-śālikā (a small shed built on the roof for getting a bird's-eye view all around), and he would watch for Him. Worrying about the late arrival of his little son, Nanda Mahārāja would remain on the candra-śālikā until he could indicate to his wife that Kṛṣṇa, surrounded by His little cowherd friends, was coming back with the calves. Nanda Mahārāja would point out the peacock feather on his child's head and would inform his beloved wife how the child was pleasing his eyes.

Mother Yaśodā would then address Nanda Mahārāja, "See my dear son, whose eyes are white, who has a turban on His head, a wrapper on His body and leg bells which tinkle very sweetly on His feet. He is coming near, along with His surabhi calves, and just see how He is wandering upon the sacred land of Vṛndāvana!"

Similarly, Mahārāja Nanda would address his wife, "My dear Yaśodā, just look at your offspring, Kṛṣṇa! See His blackish bodily luster, His eyes tinged with red color, His broad chest and His nice golden neck lace! How wonderful He looks, and how He is increasing my transcendental bliss more and more!"

When Kṛṣṇa, the beloved son of Nanda Mahārāja, steps into His kaiśora age, although He becomes more beautiful, His parents still consider Him to be in the paugaṇḍa age — even though He is between the ages of ten and fifteen. When Kṛṣṇa is in His paugaṇḍa age, some of His servants also accept Him as being in the kaiśora age. When Kṛṣṇa performs His childish pastimes, His general practice is to break the milk and yogurt pots, throw the yogurt in the courtyard and steal the cream from the milk. Sometimes He breaks the churning rod, and sometimes He throws butter on the fire. In this way, He increases the transcendental pleasure of His mother, Yaśodā.

Krpa bindu Diya

Dear Srila Prabhupada
Please Accept My Humble Obeisances.
Today on your appearance day I feel most fortunate to be connected to the movement of Sri Caitanya mahaprabhu through the threads of your causeless mercy. Till 2008 you were the spiritual master of my spiritual master and I could not imagine that I could have a personal connection to you. At a retreat by HH Bhakti Charu Swami, we were asked to talk about your influence on our lives. For the first time I gave a thought to how you have so profoundly impacted my life. I realized that just as in the Krishna Land game a person can go to Krishna directly but ends up taking a longer route than reaching you first. But from where you are we can literally jump to the lotus feet of Krishna. It's just so much more easier. As I watch and hear the memories shared by your disciples I am understanding the different flavors of your nature and your expertise and finesse in everything that you said and did. At times I am shocked that I can even be in a movement so wonderful as this because after hearing the realizations of all your disciples I am really understanding my very own mediocre position. But if you so desire Srila Prabhupad, you can make the long route shorter and make me jump to Krishna's lotus feet. As I try to incorporate the standards given by you with respect to so many facets of Krishna consciousness, I feel ashamed of my insincerity and lackadaisical attitude. I try to imagine that you are present in the same room and are observing my behavior. That helps!I immediately pull myself up and try to please you. Srila Prabhupada, you displayed great tolerance and explained that Nitai's mercy has no limit. Can I then, harbor the slightest hope that you will one day accept me as a servant of the servant? On your divine appearance day I have no words to express the magnitude of transformation that has occurred in my life by your grace. I am amazed to think that you taught us the right way to eat, drink, talk, dress, though we apparently belonged to the civilized times. In training us to reach for the highest goal you have made the seemingly impossible possible, made human beings out of animals and continue to do so through your books. I beg you that I may be able to take complete shelter of you and your many servants' lotus feet and cultivate the same greed to know Krishna. I thank you for being a part of my life and will try to work hard that you will want to see me some day.
Your servant's servant.
Nitya Navina dasi.

Seeing through the eyes of the Sastra

It was almost 1 AM, Saturday morning, the streets were still busy with vehicles. But the street where we live was calm and quiet and the only sound was the melodious bhajan Sri Rupa Manjari pada, playing on our car stereo. We had yet another late Bhakti Vriksha gathering and were just pulling into the drive way when the hysterical screams of  a female voice penetrated the still, spring air. Not expecting other souls to be around, we quickly alighted and went indoors, but managed to hear the words and see the couple who were having a fight in the middle of the street. The woman was probably in her early 40's and the man in his mid 40's.. The woman, still dressed in work clothes, her hair a  frizzy mass, was right at the bend of the road under the glare of the street lamp and kept screaming " I am your wife, your equal, not your puppet,"  The man appeared later, his voice was subdued, and he appeared to be calming down his wife. Drawing the curtains, I was musing on the pastime that lead to the birth of Kapila dev, the Prayers of Kardama Muni, the Marriage of Kardama Muni and Devahuti and the lamentation of Devahuti and thought of the reversal of roles in Kali Yuga. Being asked to speak to a small group of Vaisnavis, I had recently heard and read the pastime and seeing this explosion and battle between the sexes took me back to the Bhagavatam pages which describe the ideal conduct between man and wife. In the following paragraphs I will make an attempt to summarize from what I heard and read on this topic, for my own self purification.
In this post I will summarize the desire of Kardma Muni. In the following posts we will see the ideal relationship between Grhastha couples, based on the example of Sri Kardama Muni and Devahuti, from the Srimad Bhagavatam.
Background
After mother Earth was rescued from the demon Hiranyaksha and restored to her former position, Lord Brahma entrusts his sons , including Kardama Muni, with the task of populating the Earth. Kardama Muni is a perfected being, an Astanga Yogi, a liberated soul who apart from being an expert yogi is also a devotee of Lord Visnu engaged in devotional service to the Lord. He has no inclination to engage in family life but agrees to follow the instructions of his father and engages himself in prayers to the Lord.
The narration of his austerities spanning a period of 10,000 years was recounted by sage Maitreya to Vidura, who though was not interested in mundane affairs was interested in hearing about the procreation and creation of exemplary population, as it is acceptable to all sages and authorities of scriptures and because one becomes enlightened by hearing such activities.

Conversation between Manu and Kardama Muni -Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 3, Chapter 21
The first part of this chapter discusses the role of material desires in life, whom one must approach to fulfill the desires and the reciprocation of the Lord, through the example of Kardama Muni.
  • Kardama Muni being a liberated soul and a yogi could have made his own arrangements to procure a suitable wife to carry out the orders of his father, instead he chooses to pray to Lord Visnu and performs austerities on the banks of the river Saraswati, for 10,000 years.
  • Material desires are due to our being in the mode of passion. If we let the desires to dominate us, then desires take over leading to attachment, anger and eventually complete illusion, which is the mode of ignorance. This section of the Bhagavatam explains what one must do if not aspiring for pure devotional service, but has material desires. It explains how when the desires are engaged devotional services, the desires and senses get purified and we become situated in the mode of goodness.
  • At the end of 10,000 years, when the Lord appears before Kardama Muni, pleased with his austerities, Kardama Muni though embarrassed to request the Lord for such a material benediction still requested the Lord to fulfill his desire for a suitable wife. Srila Prabhupada mentions that Kardama Muni could have approached Uma Devi for a suitable wife but he shows the path for others by approaching Lord Visnu who is anyway the beneficiary for all sacrifices, thereby establishing His superiority and showing the ideal behaviour of a devotee. Involving Krishna in all major decisions of life reflects the level of surrender of a person and Kardama Muni exemplified this.
  • The Lord appears before his devotee to reciprocate with him. This illustrates that when Kardama Muni attained perfection through the method of worship prescribed in his times viz.Satya Yuga, the Lord appeared before him.Only someone with a purified heart can see the Lord! There was effort and this was noticed by the Lord who provided His mercy. Perfection of our sense of sight is vision of the Lord, sense of hearing is hearing the Lord etc., and Kardama Muni had attained this perfection!
  • Whether one has no desires for sense gratification, has desires or is desirous of liberation, one must always approach the Supreme Lord, because he is the ultimate source and enjoyer of all sacrifices.
  • The Lord informs Kardama Muni that Svyambhuva Manu, the illustrious emperor of the seven worlds, also the son of Brahma, who was a powerful Kshatriya would approach Kardama Muni with his wife Shatarupa and daughter Devahuti and would offer her in marriage to Kardama Muni. Lesson- When the Lord is involved, the result is always sweeter than what we could have arranged for, using our own intelligence.
  • After the Lord's departure, on the foretold day, the emperor Svyambhuva Manu arrives with his wife and daughter Devahuti, at lake Bindu Sarovara which was created by the tears of the Lord that flowed from His lotus eyes on seeing Kardama Muni.
  • Srila Prabhupada mentions in the purports, how the parents of the girl have to involve themselves in the selection of a suitable groom for their daughter and never allow the daughter to make their own decisions because the decision could be flawed by superficial considerations.
  • The next verses talk of the sweet exchange that took place between Manu and Kardama Muni and Kshatriya and a Brahmana and how there was so so much respect and mutual love between the different varnas, and also provides a beautiful description of the surroundings of Lake Bindu Sarovara.
  • The chapter ends with Kardama Muni wanting to know the reason for the visit of the Emperor to his hermitage.
We will now take a quick peek into the next chapter but delve more in detail in the coming days.
Srimad Bhagavatam - Canto 3, Chapter 22
  • The talks lead to verses where Svyambhuva Manu offers his daughter Devahuti in marriage to the sage Kardama. Princess Devahuti has her heart set on marrying Kardama Muni, after hearing all about his glories from the celestial sage Narada.
  • Kardama Muni also reveals how the mind of the Sadhaka has to be fixed on the goal i.e pure devotional service to Sri Radha and Krishna while still being in the material world, and carrying out the responsibilities. He accepts Devahuti as his bride but vows to leave family life as soon as their union produces suitable progeny.
  • Svyambhuva Manu returns to his kingdom after entrusting his daughter to the care of Kardama Muni and performs his duties in perfect Krishna consciousness.
The Bhagavatam surely is the ripened fruit of vedic knowledge and has the cure for the myriad situations that we find ourselves in life. This series is an attempt to look at things through the eyes of the Sastra, with Sastra Caksusa!, in the hopes that it will inspire us to live it!
To be continued.

Nimai-NItai.

Little Nimai Nitai after a month's stay.

Our Nitai

Our Nimai

Little Nimai-Nitai, when They came home.

As I open the guest altar two smily faces affront me. The gleaming spring sun casts its rays through a parting in the window, this makes the already shiny faces glisten like the morning dew. Whenever i see the little Nimai-Nitai  deities as i call Them, visions of Their past flash through my mind. "They are from Ekacakra and the shopkeeper who made Them said They were very special," the voice of my friend echoes in my mind. I envision Them having been served by associates of Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the times of great Sankirtan Revolution that took place long ago in Nadia..Visions of Gauridas Pandit's Gaura Nitai deities jumping off the altar and running to join the Kirtan. Visions of Pisima Goswamini's Gaura Nitai trading Their jewelry for rabri. Visions of Nimai crying for the moon and visions of Vasudev ghosh glorifying Nimai playing hide and seek with his brother in his enchanting childhood form."But aren't all deities special?" counters my mind. It then goes on to answer its own question by putting forth arguments and counter arguments about how the deities are special aand how the deities from Ekacakra are still special. All the while my hands are moving briskly collecting the Nirmalya flowers, filling water in Their pots and trying to concentrate on the seva at hand. But my mind and and gaze returns to the sweet faces of the two boys. For a moment as I admire Their chubby legs, flood pants, curly locks of hair and wondrous eyes, time stands still...I'm brought to the present by the sound of the cooker and the chirping of the noisy birds, which seem to be instructing me to chant my Gayatri mantra and rush back to the kitchen to tend to the bhoga. They came to stay for week, but stayed for over a month and have my heart in Their grasp. My heart overflows with gratitude for my spiritual master, who named our own Gaura Nitai deities as Nimai- Nitai and for Srila Prabhupada who gave us this scientific method of devotional service to the Lord, paving the way to reclaiming our lost idetitities and establishing our true connections, being in the world and not being of  it. Jai Nimai -Nitai, Jai Srila Prabhupada!
Attachments keep us in this material world. The good thing is that these very same attachments when directed to  residents of the spiritual world can free us.  Thank you for letting this crazy soul to serve you!
